Which Marvel watch order should you use?

There are two defensible answers, and which one is right depends on whether you have seen any of it before.

Release order — best for a first watch

Watching in the order the films came out is the closest thing to a default. Each film was written assuming you had seen the ones before it and knew nothing of what came after, so the reveals land with the weight they were built to carry. The gradual widening — one man in a suit, then a team, then a galaxy, then a multiverse — is the actual shape of the story, and release order is the only way to feel it.

Timeline order — best for a rewatch

Chronological order re-sorts everything by when it happens in-universe. It turns the saga into one continuous history, which is genuinely satisfying once you already know the twists. It is a poor first watch for one specific reason: it opens with Captain America: The First Avenger and then Captain Marvel, a film released nineteen entries in whose whole design assumes you already know who Nick Fury is and what the Tesseract does. Several other placements spoil reveals the same way.

Or skip most of it

The option most guides leave out: you do not have to watch all of it. Twenty-six of the sixty-nine titles carry the plot that leads into Avengers: Doomsday. The other forty-three are enrichment — often excellent, but not homework. Switch the order above to Essentials only to see just those.

The road to Avengers: Doomsday

Avengers: Doomsday arrives on , and it is the convergence point of the Multiverse Saga in the same way Infinity War was for the Infinity Saga. If you are trying to work out what to watch before Doomsday, these are the threads it is actually built on.

1. How the multiverse works

Loki seasons one and two are the single most load-bearing thing on this list. They introduce the TVA, the Sacred Timeline and the idea of variants — the vocabulary Doomsday is written in. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness then supplies the mechanism: incursions, where two universes collide and destroy each other. That is, in plain terms, the premise of the film. Spider-Man: No Way Home is where the cracks first open.

2. Who the Avengers are now

The original team is gone. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier hands the shield to Sam Wilson, Captain America: Brave New World establishes the political board, and Thunderbolts* assembles the group that carries the Avengers name into Doomsday — the asterisk in that title is the entire point.

3. The other universe

The Fantastic Four: First Steps is set in a retro-futurist world of its own, Earth-828, separate from everything else on this page. That separation is not a stylistic quirk — it is the setup. Doomsday puts the two universes on a collision course.

4. The loose ends

WandaVision and Vision Quest resolve a character left unaccounted for since 2021. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever hands Wakanda to Shuri and introduces Namor. Deadpool & Wolverine formally folds the Fox X-Men films into the multiverse, which is why Doomsday's cast list looks the way it does.

That is 26 titles, about 74 hours — twenty-one films and five series. Filter to Essentials only above and the pathway shows exactly that route, in order.

How long does it take to watch the MCU?

Depending on how completist you are, somewhere between four days and just over a fortnight of continuous viewing:

What you watchTitlesRuntime
Essentials only — the road to Doomsday26~74 hours
The films, nothing else40~88 hours (3.7 days)
Films + the Disney+ series59~173 hours (7.2 days)
Everything, including the Netflix shows69~350 hours (14.6 days)

The jump from 173 to 350 hours is almost entirely the Netflix street-level run — Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders and The Punisher add up to about 161 hours on their own, more than every Marvel film combined. They are canon, and largely optional. If you only want one, make it Daredevil.

Runtimes are per-title totals; series figures are episode count times average episode length, so treat them as close rather than exact.

Common questions

Should I watch in release order or timeline order?

Release order, the first time. The films were written assuming you had seen the ones before them, so reveals land the way they were built to. Timeline order is the better second pass — it turns the saga into a single continuous history, but it spoils several twists, most obviously by putting Captain Marvel second when it was released nineteen films in.

Do I have to watch the Disney+ series?

Not all of them. Loki, WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier carry real plot weight and are marked as essential here. The rest are enrichment. Turn Series off if you only want the films, or switch to Essentials only for the shortest complete path to Doomsday.

What is the shortest way to be ready for Avengers: Doomsday?

Choose Essentials only above. It filters the list down to the titles that materially set up Doomsday — the multiverse mechanics from Loki and Multiverse of Madness, the new team from Thunderbolts*, and the separate universe introduced in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. The running total updates as you filter.

Where can I watch all of this?

Nearly everything is on Disney+ in most regions, including the Netflix street-level shows. Titles still in cinemas are marked as such on their cards. Availability varies by country, so check your local listings.

How accurate is the timeline order?

Everything up to Avengers: Endgame is firmly established. After that, several titles have never been given a confirmed in-universe date, and reasonable sources disagree. Any card whose placement is genuinely debated is marked approximate — we would rather tell you than pretend to a precision the films do not have.
